My name is Felecia Buchanan and despite the many challenges and obstacles in my life,
I REFUSE TO GIVE UP!
I'm a black female born July 25, 1978 with a disease called arthrogryposis. With arthrogryposis you can have contracted limbs or your spinal cord is curved to either direction. There's some that have complications with their limbs and spinal cord. Unfortunately, I have been facing complications with both from birth. My spinal cord has always been severely curved to the right. I never had the capability to use my left-hand because it's drawn to my body. I use to be able to move my right-hand because of therapy but today I receive virtually no therapy and it has taken a toll on me as now I am only able to use 2 of my fingers. I am on a vent to assist me with my breathing. I live at Broward Children's Center in Pompano Beach, Florida. I arrived down here March 24, 1988. Living in an institution has been a daily struggle for me to say the least. Most days I never get out of bed and worry if they will feed and suction me. I’m not wanted here!
I enjoy writing poetry and books. I'm creating a book about my life. I wish to close my book accomplishing my dreams. I have four brothers and four sisters whom never been involved with me. My parents have been separated for years now. My mother communicates with me on a regular basis by telephone but has not seen me in 4 years. My father speaks with me once or twice a year. He mainly comes to visit me once a year.
If I continue living under this roof I'll never get the opportunity to live my life with a smile occurring day and night! My dreams are to live in my own place. I dream to own an automobile that meets my needs. I dream to speak in front of millions of people about my life. I dream to get a degree in the medical field. I dream to create a family. I dream to publish my writing.
